Places I Travel to Over and Over Again

1970s-2010s

John and I loved road trips along the California and Oregon coast. We traveled that route over and over again.

In California we would stay in Santa Barbara, Cambria, Carmel, Ferndale, Crescent City (Redwood area).

When the boys were younger, we traveled to Gold Beach, Oregon. We could fish, explore, and go out on a fishing boat. One time on the boat, the ocean turned really choppy. Poor John got so sea sick on the boat that he actually did turn green. I had never seen anyone turn green before. Sadly, he took a ribbing from the boys, and especially me. I think I may have more compassion now.

Steve and Diane lived in Portland, so when planning vacations we would go to various places in Oregon with them. My favorite vacation with them and their kids was when we drove the Columbia Gorge, staying at the Columbia Gorge Hotel. The hotel had its own gardens and waterfalls. We would take day trips visiting the waterfalls in the area — my favorite was Multnomah Falls because of its beauty, but also because of the great memories I had being there with my Nana and Papa. Now I was taking my grandkids to the same spot; we even had lunch at the same cafe. We also saw the fishery on the Columbia River.

The Columbia Gorge is so beautiful we could go time and time again, and we did. When our friends Willy and Christian from Belgium visited us, one of our road trips included the sights of the Columbia Gorge.

I encourage everyone to experience it at least once. It is so worthwhile.
