Santa Barbara and Halley's Comet

1980s

John and I traveled so many places, but one trip has very special memories with the added bonus of a surprise.

In February of 1986, John and I went to the Four Seasons Biltmore Resort in Santa Barbara. It is a beautiful property across the street from the beach and cliffs. There was a romantic atmosphere throughout the property. Our lovely room overlooked the gardens, and it was perfectly appointed.

We took a drive to see the beauty of the area, we enjoyed great food, walked the pier, and walked along the beach. On one beach walk we strolled quite a distance, talking as we went. We were both so involved in our conversation that we did not realize that we had walked into a nudist beach. We looked up and to our surprise we saw naked folks playing volleyball! We looked at each other, turned around, and headed back the way we came. We laughed every time we thought about it.

The very special memory for me was after a wonderful meal, we walked to the front garden of the resort and joined other couples looking up to the clear sky. John placed his arms around me and we stood waiting in anticipation for Halley's Comet to appear. As predicted, it did appear. We knew we would never have this experience again. We shared a perfect moment together, and now it is a perfect memory of being with my honey for a once-in-a-lifetime event.
